The Beginnings

Dear Web Searcher:

Welcome to our site. Sometime during January 1981 I ventured out of my garage in an old green car, and got a sale. The customer did not pay for 90 days (that deadbeat is still a customer and pays in 29 days). I probably played soccer that week, despite the cold. Today 17 years later I am still the only outside salesmen for Hillas Packaging. I still venture out from the same garage in an old green car. I still play soccer but at 53, am old and slow. Instead of three games a week I am able to barely manage one.

We are an ordinary small business. Our packed warehouse is 15,000 square feet and located in a not very beautiful industrial park. Thanks to Manolo, our warehouse is always neat and clean. I would be happy to show it off to you with no notice. Our sales are not much over $3,000,000 and growing slowly. Wonderful people work here, three part-time and six full-time.

The stuff you see on your computer screen was created by Zak, not me. The smartest thing I have done here is to hire brighter bulbs. That was not too hard actually. We made this site in hopes that you will buy something and cause Hillas Packaging and the people that work here to experience prosperity eventually. Our business goal is to sell you a good product at a price low enough that you will prosper too.

My responsibility is to remember that our main goal, apart from survival, has nothing to do with money or growth or impressing someone. I am here and I hope we are all here to do work we are proud of. We are free and intend to stay free to do our best, succeed and fail without the interference of a boss. We intend to be free to tell the truth even if it costs us money. We are ordinary and unknown. We do work that is as excellent as we can make it. I hope that the people who work here, the people who once worked here and even the customers and vendors think of Hillas Packaging as a place they made better and made them better too. Business is about money, this place is about working in a way that enhances us even if that costs us money. I hope we, in some small way, can join you in a struggle to make our lives beautiful even though our relationship is only about stuff for packaging.

Best Regards,

Rolly Hillas
